#53 Draw a mouth and #56 Self-portrait

So I finally do a self portrait...in the spirit of following Laura's lead to draw people this month. Going to a scary place...drawing people! I think I made myself look younger and thinner, but it does look a little like me.

And then there are the lips. As I drew these I thought, "how can you shade in pen and ink and not have them look hairy." Well look at Eefje's drawing to see how...stunning! Then I realized that the challenge included journalling about speaking out or remaining silent. Well, I just know that I tend to get in more trouble from speaking out, than from remaining silent. These days I think there are a lot of times when we should speak out, but we remain silent because it will cause us less trouble or not make waves. It seems that often the majority keeps silent and lets the fringe or more extreme element make all the noise. Remaining silent can be a wise thing to do....but sometimes it is just the easiest thing to do. It's pretty important to be truthful with yourself about your motives.

I don't think any of those lips look hairy. They look good to me. I wish I could get myself to try people more often but I am definitely not ready for a month of it yet!

I love to see you in drawing form! and I could not agree with you more about speaking out and not letting a fringe speak for all of us.

Love your mouths. And your self-portrait is great - you have a winsome gaze in it.

Thanks for the nice comments you left on my blog. I have been enjoying your's too!
Great lips (not hairy at all) and you do so well with figures. It makes me want to TRY some figure drawing - I am really bad at it, so I am going to get busy and practice.

Wonderful job, Joyce. I especially like your eyes. I go with the not-hairy lips vote ;D.

Great self portrait -- and the lips are smooth as silk! :-)
Love the sentiment in the journal comments, too -- well said.

i like these drawings and your reflections about them. remaining silent always makes you look good, you know. but it is hard to resist having a good 'say' once in a while.

ah well, stay silent and just DRAW. it speaks volumes, no??
