Fall Bike Ride

Today we took a bike ride along the I&M Canal. If you live near this path and have not tried it....do! It's a beautiful path. We rode from Ottawa to Utica, walked around the Burgoo Festival for a while and rode back. I did not have time to sketch, so I was trying really hard to remember what some of the path looked like...and then I came home and drew this from memory. This is the first time I've tried to memorize a scene to draw later.

If you knew me you would laugh. I am famous for my bad memory. Or infamous. For my friends and family it is a big joke and a pain in the butt. I take tons of pics to gaurd against losing wonderful memories. Drawing helps me to remember too... when I look at a drawing done earlier, it brings me right back to that place and time.

Fantastic! And from memory. I too, have the WORST memory for things. I'll have to try with sketching and see if I can improve my recall. The path looks inviting. I love the fall season.

I love this bike trip! the Starved Rock area is soooo beautiful. I love your idea and your sketch. OUr family does a lot of bike riding and its hard to ask everyone to stop so I can draw. I'm usually frustrated. Hiking is diferent thought and we did some of that over the weekend.

This drawing is fabulous! The colors and the lively lines leap off the page. I often draw using imagination to fill in memory's gaps. I like that freedom.

You are an inspiration to the rest of us BMrs (bad memory). I aspire to draw from memory, but am still hooked from pencil to camera. This is great--your work has really flourished in the moleskine.

What a lovely drawing. I like how you wrote on the side too. I really like your journal entries. I've tried to take my sketchbook with me when I bike but it's so darn hot in FL. I can't stop riding because when I do so does the breeze.

Joyce, Your sketch of the bike trail is fabulous, a beautiful memory preserved for future generations. I wish my sketching was half as expressive.

Thank you! THis was really a stretch for me....my memory is usually amazingly short. But this just proves that if I apply my self I can remember more than I thought possible. We had such a good time that I just wanted to somehow get a sketch of it done...but we did not have time to stop and still get back before dark.
