Everyday Matters Challenge #21 Draw Something Really Old

This is my drawing for this week's challenge. If I take my glasses off and put this up to my face, I can adjust the image until it is in focus for my eyes and view the neat 3-D effect. It did not come with any of the cards, but you can get them for a couple of dollars a piece...so we look for neat ones to buy for mom. There are cards of famous places, plays, stories, all kinds of things.

EMC #11 Glasses and #4 Cup

Today I drew my sunglasses and my water cup:

What I learned: reflections are fun and hard! The way the light refracts and bends things really makes you look carefully. I'm not sure how that cup got so wonky, but somehow it does not bother me. Maybe I've had too much caffine today!

EMC #10 Draw a Hand

Today I tried to draw people in the parking lot of W-mart. I was not having much luck, but this time I am not quitting. I am going to keep drawing all the bad drawings I need to to get to drawing decent looking people. I felt so tense after that, that I decided to start the challenge of drawing a hand by doing a coutour drawing.

Then I attempted to draw my hand. It turned out better than I thought it would-it seems I have a real phobia about drawing anybody-or parts of any body!

Street Scene

I am doing it --I am actually drawing daily--and enjoying myself too. This is scene from downtown, but away from the more picturesque square. It started out as just a picture of the tree, but then I decided to fill the page. I drew it on the inside cover of my Moleskine so as not to waste any pages. This another of those midnight drawings-but I am trying not to go to bed until I have drawn something each day.

Believe it or not that store really is called "Lots of Stuff."

Drawing People

Drawing people is something I want to get a handle on......so I jumped in today and did the lady at Wal-Mart. I think I need to do a lot of this kind of fast sketch to get started.

The little doggie was the cutest thing....a little girl was pulling him behind her scooter and he was waiting for her to come out of the store with her candy.

Home Again Antiques

For a couple of years my mom and I ran an antiques shop from this building on the square. It was fun but not profitable. So we finally decided to move our stuff to an antique mall nearby. It was sad to close the shop, but now we still sell--we make money, and don't have to be there everyday! Yea! More time to draw!

Whoopie!

I got my copy of Everyday Matters by Danny Gregory today! Had to order it at B&N. I was suprised to find that it is hard cover-love that! If you do not have a copy and are interested in sketch journaling-get one--it is an inspiring little book. My son read it too and now he is going to start sketching everyday. My daughter started a couple of days ago.
Here is one of my son's drawings (he is 18):

EMC #15 Draw Trees

Today was a scorcher so I went down by the river to draw. I saw a bunch of kids jumping from a tree into the river to cool off. I was not brave enough to sketch them. Instead I tried to sketch the opposite bank. I definitely need to try more trees because this was hard--I kept getting lost and losing my place in the foliage. There must be a great way to render greenery- I need to keep my eyes open.

When I got back I decided to try out some colored pencils. My cousin gave me what was left of her set, but I haven't used them, because I really don't have a clue as to how. So I did the coloring book -it did help though because now you can tell that the sun was hitting some areas and others were deep in shade. If anyone knows a good site with colored pencil tips, I would love to have the link!

#1-Draw a Shoe and #18 Draw What is Outside the Window

I wonder why some days it is so much harder to draw (see) than other days. But I am leaving what I draw so I can see what happens when drawing everyday.

I am drawing in pen because I am trying to not get hung up on all the erasing I do when I draw in pencil.

Something I Made

Today my sister, Jennifer, came over and we spent some time sketching by the pond. Here is a sketch I did--I added watercolor because of how it looks in all the wonderful sketches I see online--but it is hard! I am calling it Everyday Matters challenge #19 since my husband and I made the pond.

Here is the sketch Jennifer did at the same time:

We need to do this more often! It was fun and did not really take that long--which is always my excuse --I can't take time to draw when I have all this other stuff to get done. Not anymore-this is now a priority too.

Journal of my fantasy

After reading Art Supply porn http://www.dannygregory.com/weblog/archives/2004_04.html#000143 I thought I would share with you a few pages from a story my sister wrote and illustrated for me. All my life I have been facinated with a log cabin on a lake near where we grew up--Jennifer knows of my obsession/love of this place and last year for my birthday she wrote and illustrated a story for my birthday. In this story the fictional owner finds out about me and gifts me with the wonderful old place, and sets it up so that all the improvements needed are done to my liking (which means that it has indoor plumbing and modern appliances, but it all looks old, old, old). The book is one of the best gifts I have ever received. In it she indulges all my fantasies--I even find lots of wonderful old paintings hidden in the house-painted by a previous owner.

This is one of my favorite illustrations in the book--it is my sister and me paddleboating.

I get the keys to the cabin!

Another page with a fav book, and most of our family (J was working) at the lake.

Thank you Jen for making a dream come true!

Draw a Tool

I joined the Everyday Matters drawing group at yahoo. Looks like a wonderful bunch.

OK. I am not doing so well at daily yet. Want to hear my excuses? The graduation party on Saturday for my son, the porch we are building and have to get done by Sat. No? Oh well. ...here is my drawing of a tool for Everyday Matters challenge #16. The remote control is not much of a tool, and definitely not a fav but it was midnight, and the pruners were outside. I hope every post is not going to contain a sketch drawn at midnight!

Draw Daily

That is my new goal....or my old goal, which I am now trying to actually accomplish. And guess what? I did not draw today, but I will put up a pic out of my sketchbook. Since it is midnight, drawing daily will commence in the morning.

This is a sketch done from an old photo of my daughter and nephew. They sure grow fast.
